COMPOSITES FABRICATION TECHNICIAN

Position Description —


Desert Strategic and its affiliates are a development-stage organization dedicated to the advancement of commercial drone technology for commercial and military applications. 

We are looking for an experienced Composites Fabrication technician that can lead the fabrication of custom composite parts for a small unmanned aircraft. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work as part of a team in a unique leading-edge design and custom-build technical and professional aviation role (“Try & Fly”).

In this position, you will assist our engineering team to design, prepare, fabricate, and test airframe, structural, and aerodynamic surfaces made of carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass with both wet layup, prepreg, and vacuum bag manufacturing techniques.

Upon completion of fabrication, you will support the assembly of components into a completed aircraft through flight testing, maintenance and repair of airframe components. 

The primary job location is the Phoenix, AZ MSA but some travel to California and other US locations is expected (less than 20% of total time).

Responsibilities —


  • Support the development, manufacturing, installation and testing of composite structures for small and large unmanned aircraft.

  • Develop and maintain a composites fabrication capability including the necessary tools, equipment, and supplies to fabricate components and molds in house.

  • Independently plan and execute assigned activities, collaborating with internal and external teams to ensure successful completion.

  • Ensure all tasks are carried out in accordance with schedules and client expectations.

  • Build flight-ready parts according to designs and plans including specified layup orientations, material properties, and plans.

  • Maintain proper documentation of all work performed and timely provide status updates as required.

  • Test product capabilities and identify areas for improvement.

Requirements —


  • Must be US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident

  • Valid U.S. Driver License

  • Must reside within 50 miles from the Phoenix, AZ MSA

  • Ability to commute and work on site in the East Valley (Scottsdale/Fountain Hills)

  • Periodic drive-based travel to client sites & up to 20% flight-based travel; work at home supported if technical environment is suitable to execute assigned responsibilities

  • At least one (1) year experience in the full manufacture of composite structures including carbon fiber wet layups, vacuum bagging, and prepreg materials

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, flexible environment

  • Ability to work on some non-routine hours

  • Ability to self-learn in a highly dynamic environment

  • Successfully work both independently and as part of a team

  • Willingness to work out in the field

  • Self-motivated, self-starter, energetic, assertive

Ideal Candidate —


  • 5+ year history of composites manufacturing experience in aerospace

  • Deep familiarity and expertise with the fabrication of composite materials, including fiberglass, Kevlar, and Carbon Fiber

  • Deep familiarity and expertise in running a composites shop including methods, tooling, and

  • Skilled in the design and analysis of composite structures including material selection, orientations, layup design, pattern design, and structural testing

Technical Requirements —


  • Must be US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident

  • Licensed FAA Part 107 drone operator

  • Valid U.S. Driver License

  • Must reside within 50 miles from the Phoenix, AZ MSA

  • Periodic drive-based travel to client sites & up to 30% flight-based travel; work at home supported if technical environment is suitable to execute assigned responsibilities

  • At least one (1) year technical work experience in aviation or drone-specific context (electrician, mechanical, assembly, repair). 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, flexible environment

  • Ability to work on some non-routine hours

  • Ability to self-learn in a highly dynamic environment

  • Successfully work both independently and as part of a team

  • Willingness to work out in the field

Physical Requirements —


  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions (including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, and humidity) and work environments where exposure to dust, dirt, and other outdoor elements is common

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, often ranging from 50 to 100 lbs, sometimes over uneven or rough terrain.

  • Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, or squatting to access and work on equipment located at ground level or in confined spaces.

  • Physical endurance to perform strenuous tasks for extended periods, including working in awkward or uncomfortable positions; reaching and working on equipment inside enclosures, cabinets, or elevated areas.

  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, and controls. This could include using hand tools, operating equipment, or making precise adjustments.
